The Order of the Tadpole
Description
Quest: The Order of the Tadpole -- Complete Guide
"The Order of the Tadpole" is one of the key and most useful side quests in Fallout 76. Completing this quest allows the player to officially join the Pioneer Scouts, earn the rank of Opossum, and most importantly, unlock the Standard Backpack, which significantly increases carry weight.
General Information
- Start Location: Pioneer Scout Camp in the Toxic Valley.
- Quest Giver: Scoutmaster Jaggy -- a Mister Handy robot.
- Main Reward: Standard Backpack recipe (+60 carry weight at level 50), Tadpole Scout uniform and hat, access to Opossum badges.
Walkthrough Steps
After talking to Scoutmaster Jaggy, you must prove you are worthy of being a Scout by demonstrating four core virtues: Kindness, Helpfulness, Bravery, and Growth.
1. Kindness: Help a Friend
- Objective: Revive a downed teammate or another player.
- How to complete: The easiest way is to do this in a team with a friend or during public events where players frequently get downed. You will need a Stimpak to perform the revival.
- Tip: If you want to speed up your progress toward a specific badge (Medic), try reviving a player who is in water -- this will check off an additional difficult challenge requirement.
2. Helpfulness: Clean up the Camp
- Objective: Clean up the Kiddie Corner Cabins.
- How to complete: Speak with Scoutmaster Pompy. He will give you the daily quest "Clean Up". You will need to collect toxic waste scattered around the camp area and dispose of it in a containment bin. Be careful, the waste is radioactive!
3. Bravery: Control the Pests
- Objective: Control the pests at Dolly Sods Wilderness.
- How to complete: Speak with Scoutmaster Treadly. He will give you the daily quest "Stings and Things". You will need to collect parts from various Appalachian insects:
- Radroach (Radroach meat)
- Bloodbug (Bloodbug proboscis)
- Bloatfly (Bloatfly gland)
- Stingwing (Stingwing barb)
- Tick (Tick blood sack)
- Tip: All creature markers will appear on the map, but you can use ingredients already present in your inventory if you gathered them beforehand.
4. Growth: Pass Exams and Earn Badges
- Objective: Pass 3 Tadpole Scout exams and complete their respective challenges.
- How to complete: This is the longest part of the quest. You need to select 3 Tadpole challenges in your challenge menu (World -> Pioneer Scouts: Tadpole) and fully complete them.
- Each challenge consists of two parts:
- Knowledge Exam: Taken at terminal stations located at the Pioneer Scout Camp or Camp Adams. The exam consists of 5 random questions related to the chosen badge topic. You need at least 4 correct answers to pass.
- Practical Tasks: Fulfilling specific conditions in the game (e.g., taking photos of certain objects, killing enemies with specific weapons, crafting items).
Recommended Badges for Beginners:
- Athlete: Requires completing three easy time trials (at Camp Adams, Vault-Tec University, and New River Gorge Bridge), as well as maxing out Strength and Agility stats.
- Archer: Requires crafting a bow, repairing it, shooting targets at the Pioneer Scout Camp shooting range, and killing several enemies with a bow.
- Hunter or Codebreaker: Have relatively straightforward requirements for hunting down animals with specific weapons or hacking terminals/picking locks.
Rewards
Once all 4 virtues are completed, return to Scoutmaster Jaggy. He will host a formal promotion ceremony.
- Standard Backpack: Automatically added to your crafting recipes. You can craft it at an armor workbench. The backpack can be upgraded every 10 levels (up to level 50, where it provides the maximum +60 carry weight bonus).
- Cosmetics: You will receive the Tadpole Scout uniform and hat.
- Opossum Badges: Unlocks access to the next Scout rank and new, more difficult challenges, which yield tokens to purchase unique backpack modifications (such as a refrigerator or high capacity mod) from the Scout vending machines.
